This category contains coins largely relating to the years after the fall of Rome, when the empire was effectively run out of Constantinople (modern Istanbul).
The term Byzantine for this period of rule is a modern use since the Emperor and citizens of the time considered themselves “Romans” even though the western part of the empire had fallen into disarray.
